How Do I Help Someone Who Needs to Lose Weight?

Hi folks, Christopher Lawrence with healthytransformations.CA. I did wanna to talk to you about something just a little bit more serious today. I know some of you have friends and family who, you’re worried about, you’re worried about their health problems, you’re worried about inflammation in their body, you’re worried about their weight and it’s hard to talk to them about it. I’ve got a few folks in my family too and it’s hard to talk to them about it. And so I wanted to give you just a couple of tips about how you can talk to people about this. And the most authentic way that I have been able to do this is actually just being straightforward with compassion. So we call it, honesty with compassion. And we always talk about it from a place of concerns.

So I talk about it from the perspective that I care about you a lot. I love you and I’m concerned about your health. You are an influencer in my life. I look to you, you’re part of my support system. You’re part of my village. And when I see what’s happening with you, with your body, I’m concerned, I’m worried. And I wanted to know if we could have a conversation about that. Sometimes they’re going to say no, and if they say no, you say, okay, great, thank you. There’s nothing else for us to talk about and end the conversation, that’s all that you can do. Don’t push it. Nothing, Unless you’re doing an intervention, in which case you should probably have a professional there to do that. But otherwise you kind of come at it from the perspective of just compassion and, and if they say, okay, let’s talk about it, but I’m not going to change anything and talk about it. and stick to a place of facts. It’s like, I, I noticed that you ate three pizzas last night. and I don’t say that to be ridiculous because there are people who do , I noticed that you had three pizzas last night. That’s concerning to me. That’s not healthy. I noticed that there’s been some weight gain , right? So we try to stick to facts and then we talk about the concern and then, and then we make a request, So there’s this kind of really cool thing called nonviolent communication. You can check it out. I’m not going to teach it on this video, but you can check out nonviolent communication. There’s four simple steps to it, and you can even use that as an opportunity to prepare a conversation as well. Christopher Lawrence, healthytransformation.CA. Phyto What? That’s Right, Phytonutrients.

Hello, folks, Dr. Michael Breen here with The Healthy Transformations program is run by myself and Christopher Lawrence. If you’re having issues related to your health, overweightness, obesity, and really are looking for change, the Healthy Transformations is really the program that will help you get past these issues. I wanna take a couple minutes and talk about a concept called phytonutrition. Phyto, P-H-Y-T-O. And it means plant, is really what it boils down to. One thing that’s been consistent in nutritional science for at least three decades, it’s probably more like four or five decades, is that plant-based diets have consistently demonstrated themselves to be those that lead to better health outcomes. Now, plant-based doesn’t necessarily mean vegetarian. It means that a predominance off the volume of the food that you’re getting is actually coming from plant sources.

Now, what’s interesting about this is that science that has developed since the year 2000, maybe 2005, has in fact identified why this may be the case. And it boils down to these chemicals that are generally very, very broad classification, but called phytonutrients. So nutritional-based chemicals that come from plant sources. What’s been identified, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, who is the leader of the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute and one of the very, very top researchers in the field of functional medicine, was involved in this research back in the early 2000s, and in fact stated that in his career, this was probably the single most important scientific discovery that he had been involved with. And that was the identification of this, that these chemicals that come from plants get into our bodies after we consume plant-based materials, it’s digested, the phytonutrients are expressed with the help of the microbiome. They travel throughout our body and they go to cells, and these phytonutrients actually initiate a series of biochemical events in the cell that actually lead directly to genetic influence. And that is big stuff. The phyto nutrients attach to the cells, the cells then respond to the presence of the phyto nutrients, they use that information to send signals to the nucleus, which is where the genes and the DNA of our body resides, and this influence leads to positive health outcomes. The importance of this can’t be overstated. It is a big, big deal.

What is the bottom line? We need to actually consume significant amounts of plant-based material to be able to drive the effect where our genetic potential is expressed through the food that we eat. Obesity, Weight Loss and Weight Gain

Hello, folks. Dr. Michael Breen here speaking on the website. I just wanted to make some comments, brief ones, about the phenomenon of weight loss and weight gain I guess is part of that. Overweightness and obesity is plaguing the Western, the industrialized, the industrialized world and in fact, it’s plaguing a great deal of the world right now. Data on overweightness and obesity is consistently reporting that greater than 50% of the population in many, many countries is either overweight or obese meaning that if you are of normal weight that you’re actually in the minority which is a very, very unusual kind of consideration. What’s important to note is that overweightness has been mismanaged to a very great extent for a long period of time. A whole model of weight gain or weight loss being the management of calories has been demonstrated to be in fact incorrect. It’s called the energy balance model and it’s been shown to be incorrect at best and in fact harmful at worst in many circumstances. Recidivism which is the rate of weight loss and then gaining weight, weight gain again based upon behaviors is remarkably high and it’s because the model actually doesn’t work. Truly, weight gain is the consequence of inflammatory phenomena that take place in the body. We now see weight gain, overweightness and obesity as actually one of the symptoms of an inflammatory phenomena much like the symptoms of chronic disease, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease. These things are all bunched together and weight gain is part of that. In fact, fatty liver disease is now being bunched into this category as well.


So what’s really important for people who are dealing with weight related issues is that they actually get the very best advice that they can on how to manage this stuff and the management is really by an anti-inflammatory dietary program. Diabetes Isn't Necessary

Hello, folks. Dr. Michael Breen here with the Healthy Transformations program and That’s the site that you’re on right now. Myself and Christopher Lawrence run the Healthy Transformations program and just wanted to give you a little information today about one of the things that we have great success with and that in fact is Type 2 diabetes. Many people in culture these days are suffering from Type 2 diabetes. If they’re not there, they’re in a prediabetic state. Pretty much anyone who has been overweight for a period of time is in a prediabetic state and the incidence of these two phenomena combined represents a really significant proportion of the population. It’s kinda sad to consider that that’s the case. Once a person develops Type 2 diabetes in the full-blown state, different kinds of medications are often used to get the condition under control in the traditional medical model. Commonly, Metformin would be one of them and that’s to aid in lowering blood sugar levels and of course insulin is often prescribed for people, artificial insulin of course, not the self-produced insulin, to also bring down the blood sugar levels. What’s remarkable about the Healthy Transformations program is that by correct food modeling and I want you to really pay attention to this ’cause this is a big deal, by correct food modeling, you can lower your blood sugar and you can eliminate the need for insulin and Metformin simply by applying proper behavioral strategies.


In our program, we have had multiple insulin dependent Type 2 diabetics that are no longer taking insulin anymore. So the contemporary kinda forward thinking, research based, holistic scientific model is now saying that Type 2 diabetes is in fact a behavioral condition. Once you’ve got the condition or been told that you have it or diagnosed or labeled, does that mean that you have to deal with it for the rest of your life and the answer’s absolutely not. In many, many circumstances, the phenomenon of Type 2 diabetes actually can be changed. So if you are one of those people who are suffering from and have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes taking Metformin, taking insulin or even if you’ve been told that you’re in the prediabetic state, there is absolute hope. You do not have to deal with this for the rest of your life and quite honestly, you don’t want to. It’s a devastating disease and it’s deadly. The mortality from it is very high and it takes a long time to get there so you don’t feel well for a long, long time. How Food Has Changed Over The Years


With the hectic lifestyles and time consuming acts people engage in, timesaving products are in high demand. Fast foods are relatively the first option when it comes to feeding. There has been an increase in the rate of growth in consumer’s expenditures on fast food. Fast food is the name given to food that can be prepared and served quickly. Fast food might seem harmless (said nobody ever!), satisfy your hunger and be cheap but it has other consequences beyond just gaining some kilos. It has been reported previously that fast foods independently purchased by adolescents are often unhealthy, forbidden or frowned upon by parents.

What is the fast-food climate?

Eight in 10 Americans eat fast food at least once a month and half eats it once a week. Today, more than 160,000 fast- food restaurants feed more than 50 million Americans each and every day, generating sales of more than $110 billion dollars annually. Leaving home cooked meals for snacks is the major trend, for over 25 years, people have depended on burgers, fries, pizza and sweets than we do on home cooked meals. As good as fast food seem, its effects is on the high side, unlike in the 1950s less than 10% of Americans were overweight

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the generally persistent upward trend of Americans’ weight began after World War II. In the 1950s less than 10% of Americans were overweight or obese. As fast- food restaurants and processed foods took control of our diets, the numbers increased. So much so that now more than 60% of American’s are considered overweight or obese and believe it or not, more than 50% of Canadians are now overweight or obese as well.

What about making food choices?

Making food choices can be complex and influenced by many factors that affect our choice of foods. They include the following:

  • Taste rules: majorly, we choose what we eat because we like the way it tastes or the way it feels (crunches or melts usually). Taste preferences started since we were born, as babies, we have preferences for sugar and fats. Therefore, it is inborn but nevertheless, eating healthily requires discipline. You can teach yourself to love the taste of healthy food and know easy and healthy eating techniques.
  • Favorite foods: most of our favorite foods are food that give us joy and only few people have fruits and vegetables as their favorite.  However, we can keep our favorite food as part of healthy diets by changing your tastebuds to enjoy leafy greens as a favourite (Yes! It is possible!)
  • How it looks: Most times how yummy a food looks attracts us to it. Most times even when we are full, we get attracted to some foods again because they look too good to be ignored which has nothing to do with hunger or being full.
  • Cost and convenience: people that do not have time for shopping and cooking choose time saving foods. If you follow the trend, then people in this category tend to rely more on fast foods which are unhealthy for them. For your health sake, you can visit quick serve restaurants where you get nutritious soup, salad and sandwich that won’t sabotage your diet.
  • Too many choices: studies have reported the greater the variety of foods, the more we tend to eat. In addition, meals that are monotonous do not lead to the act of overeating. Most people consume food the way they see it. A visit to the buffet restaurant, they end up sampling all the food they could lay their hands on. To satisfy all form of curiosity, keep the variety of food to the barest minimum level.
  • Social settings: Humans tend to eat more outside the house. Some studies reported that the size of food we eat increase with the number of people at the table. Also, when you dine with people that are conscious about their meals, we tend to grow the habit which will help us a lot.

Obesity:  fast food is the number 1 leading cause of obesity in the world. Studies have shown that obesity rate has increased drastically and this is linked to consumption of fast food and sugar. In the United States unlike in the early 1960s when obesity among adults was 13 percent while in 2016, it rose to 40 percent and fast food were often blamed for this increase. Fast foods contain high carbohydrate and fat which makes it become the biggest contributor to obesity and people increasing in weight.

What’s in your food (or not in your food)?

Contents of the fast foods: poisonous ingredients are often contained within different types of fast foods. Majorly these poisonous contents of fast foods are actually poisonous to the human body until it is combined or sprayed with something else.

Low in nutrition value: in most cases, these fast foods are always low in quality nutrition values. it lacks major essentials required by the body such as vitamins and minerals.

Artificial trans-fat: most fast foods add artificial trans-fat to their food and most of these trans-fat is created through harsh chemical process. Which are not suitable for human consumption.

How it’s affecting you…

Brain cells and functions: Abandoning fast foods can help protect your brain cells and improve your brain functions. The consumption of organic foods provides you with a lot of nutrients, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals that contribute to proper bodily health in one way or the other. It also protects the fat in your brain, improve things like concentration, memory, focus and energy.
